The Edge represents one of the largest and most ambitious projects in New York City. The Edge is a mixed-use development on the Brooklyn Waterfront in the newly rezoned neighborhood of Williamsburg and occupies over seven acres along the East River. The project consists of four buildings, including a 30-story and a 15-story residential tower with 361 and 205 market rate apartments, and two mid-rise buildings containing 348 affordable housing units. In total, and including a future phase two 39-story residential tower, The Edge will represent over 1.3 million square feet, with 60,000 sf of retail, parking for 1,000 vehicles, and a waterfront esplanade, complete with a water taxi pier and the Empire Pier, on axis with the Empire State Building across the river.

The project is the largest residential project in New York City to achieve LEED Gold Certification and its green features include regionally sourced construction materials, 70% of energy purchased from renewable sources (wind, solar, hydro, and biomass), biodiesel fuel used for on-site construction equipment, bike storage rooms, restored waterfront access, on-site hybrid Zip Car location for residents, and roof terraces with heat reflective pavers.

The two mid-rise buildings have two-tone brick exteriors, and create a transition in scale and material between the typical existing brick buildings of Williamsburg and the new contemporary towers on the waterfront. The two towers have light colored cast stone and glass facades with balconies and blue glass railings. Their massing was generated from the prerequisite of maximizing views and offering many different types of residential layouts, including studios, 1, 2, 3 bedroom apartments, as well as townhouses and duplex penthouse residences.

The towers also house a large amenities package, which includes an all season pool, fitness centers, movement studios, multi-function sports facilities, a spa, chef’s kitchens, screening rooms, game rooms, party rooms, and a children’s playroom. The pool, though connected to one of the towers, is a volume onto itself, with its tilted roof plane, all glass walls with large sliding doors, and slanted exterior metal columns. The pool and the entire complex, heralds the return of the engagement of the East River and its magnificent views for all to enjoy.
