This project consisted in the conversion of nineteenth century mills into 146 federally subsidized loft apartments for working artists. These old Victorian mills were originally designed with large open interiors to accommodate large machinery and the maximum amount of natural light in the days before artificial lighting. The large nine-foot windows and the 12 to 15 foot ceilings are in keeping with the contemporary designs of wide-open spaces, with daylight streaming in, unusual interiors and features such as exposed piping, beams, and brick.
